Boxing Clever

The project aims to increase individual and community recovery capital by developing a programme that supports and promotes recovery in the community.

The programme functions as a community-based initiative, offering personal development opportunities within a local setting. Upon completing the 30-week programme, participants can increase their recovery capital by acquiring skills that could further their educational journey. The programme focuses on fostering resilient identities while promoting educational achievement, physical wellness, and the reduction of harmful or risky behaviors—key factors in sustaining long-term recovery.

The initiative also provides a space for participants to access localised recovery support as an alternative to attending addiction-specific services.

NEIC Dual Diagnosis – Community Capacity Building

The project was a joint collaborative in partnership with the Dublin North North East Recovery College

This project aimed to build on a previous initiative, ‘Enhancing Dual Diagnosis Awareness,’ which was implemented in 2019 to support the NEIC community and service providers. This initiative was developed in response to the Mulvey Report (Mulvey, 2017) and the NEIC Strategic Plan (Dublin City Council North East Inner City Programme Office, 2019). Its primary goal was to strengthen community capacity in addressing Dual Diagnosis.

A key aspect of the project involved establishing a community dialogue forum, engaging with key stakeholders, delivering trauma-informed community workshops, and providing enhanced Dual Diagnosis skills training.

The impact of this process became evident in multiple ways. Community organisations gained a clearer understanding of the services available for Dual Diagnosis, identified service gaps, and developed better collaboration strategies to bridge these gaps. A Dual Diagnosis network was successfully established, leading to a significant improvement in practitioner skills to effectively support individuals with Dual Diagnosis. Additionally, a structured and integrated pathway was developed for youth and adult services, ensuring a more cohesive and effective response to Dual Diagnosis in the community.

Despite these advancements, some challenges remained. Increased engagement from statutory services was needed, as community-based organisations continued to provide the majority of care resources for individuals with Dual Diagnosis. Further refinement of referral pathways and improved formal communication between services were also necessary. Nevertheless, the project uncovered effective approaches and best practices, with promising examples of successful implementation already visible in parts of the community.

The evaluation demonstrated that the NEIC community had the capacity to respond to Dual Diagnosis. With targeted resources, the establishment of a Dual Diagnosis recovery community was both feasible and sustainable.

Eeefcom (Embedding Emancipatory educational framework in Communities)

This project has developed an international network of professionals, experts by experience, academics and people affected by mental health and substance use issues, with a view to building community capacity in responding to these issues through designing and implementing an empowering adult educational process in five designated communities. The project has evaluated the impact of the participatory process and educational intervention on participant stakeholders and developed good practice guidelines for others who may wish to mirror the process in their communities.

This was an Erasmus+ Project-Cooperation partnership in adult education. This project aimed to embed an emancipatory educational framework in communities for people marginalised and excluded because of mental health and substance misuse issues.

Overall objectives:

  1. Establishment of an overarching participatory action research (PAR) process that incorporates students, associate partners, partners and any other relevant stakeholders in the educational process and project outcomes
  2. Establish proof of concept evaluation framework adopting Participatory Action Research methods.
  3. Implementation of educational Processes.
  4. Development of Good Practice Guidelines based on the project process and proof of concept.
